B Y S Carga General S.L. (Boluda & Suárez), a joint venture between Boluda Lines and Germán Suárez Investment, has announced the certification of its implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a ceremony held at the Las Palmas Port Authority. This event marks a significant achievement in the company’s commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures including Beatriz Calzada, President of the Las Palmas Port Authority, Francisco Trujillo, the Authority’s Director, and Javier Climent, CEO of Boluda & Suárez. The event also saw a strong turnout from the business community within the Las Palmas Port, alongside key company executives.

OCA GLOBAL, the firm responsible for verifying the compliance with the SDGs, was represented by José Antonio Zamora, their Operations Manager. Patricia Gálvez, OCA’s auditor for Castilla y León, Fernando Lanuza, OCA’s delegate in the Canary Islands, and Manuel Luaces from Luaces Consultores, who facilitated the company’s Equality Plan registration, were also in attendance.

Beatriz Calzada commended Boluda & Suárez for their pioneering achievement, being the first company in the Canary Islands to obtain certification for all 17 SDGs. “This milestone represents not only significant environmental progress but also a dedication to social responsibility, enhancing the quality of life for the company’s workers. The certification shows that with determination and interest, the SDGs can be met. It sets a powerful example for other companies at the Port of Las Palmas and the Port Authority itself, guiding us towards decarbonization and sustainability,” she said.

Javier Climent highlighted the company’s journey since its inception in 2020, emphasizing their goal of excelling in workplace safety, customer service, and securing key certifications.

“We are the only Canary Island company to have achieved compliance with all 17 SDGs, and the only one nationally recognized by OCA Global and Green Certificate,” Climent stated. He also noted the company’s voluntary implementation of an Equality Plan, underscoring their commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace.

The United Nations Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda to address sustainable development, aiming for progress in human well-being, planetary health, and prosperity while fostering universal peace and justice. Boluda & Suárez has embraced this agenda, adapting to the requirements of the SDGs and leveraging the improvements these goals can bring, actively working towards their fulfillment.

A Milestone in Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility

Since September 2023, B&S has been implementing the SDGs as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy, with guidance from the OCA Certification Institute. This strategic move aligns with the company’s goal to meet the objectives of the 2030 Agenda effectively.

In addition to achieving certification for the 17 SDGs, Boluda & Suárez celebrated the approval of their Equality Plan in March 2023. Despite not being legally obligated to adopt such a plan, the company has demonstrated its dedication to gender equality, particularly notable in the traditionally male-dominated maritime sector. The successful implementation of the SDGs at Boluda & Suárez is attributed to the hard work and commitment of their team, the quality of their relationships with suppliers, clients, and third parties, and the continuous improvement and growth initiatives led by the company’s management.

Boluda & Suárez operates as a logistics provider specializing in the handling of various types of cargo, including heavy lift items like wind turbines and risers, general cargo such as scrap, big bags, and paper coils, and bulk goods like sand, fertilizers, crushed glass, and grains. In recent years, the company has expanded its focus to renewable energy markets, aiming to drive the development of marine renewable energy, particularly offshore wind power.

The company operates nationwide, primarily leveraging the terminals owned by the Boluda Group. In the Canary Islands, Boluda & Suárez manages six maritime terminals: two in the Port of Las Palmas (León y Castillo Terminal and Boluda Maritime Terminal Las Palmas), and additional terminals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), Arrecife (Lanzarote), and Santa Cruz de La Palma. These facilities are equipped with the latest technology and advanced equipment, ensuring efficient and modern operations.

This certification highlights Boluda & Suárez’s leadership in sustainability within the maritime industry. Their comprehensive approach to meeting the SDGs, combined with their proactive stance on gender equality, sets a high standard for corporate responsibility. As the company continues to grow and innovate, their commitment to sustainable practices and social responsibility will undoubtedly influence and inspire other businesses within and beyond the maritime sector.
